Roo Road Rescue in the classroom
A free browser game that shows students why animals cross roads at dawn and dusk, and what drivers can do about it. No ads, no chat, nothing to install.
Why it suits a classroom
- Free to start. Nine road trips and the first four Big Lap legs are free to play.
- No ads and no chat. There is no violence, and the game rewards slowing down and keeping animals safe.
- Nothing to install. It runs in a recent browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox) on a phone, tablet or computer.
- No account needed to play. Progress is saved in the student's own browser. Signing in is only needed to buy the full game or save a score to the world ranking.
- Three languages. English, Thai and Simplified Chinese.
Discussion questions
- Why are dawn and dusk the riskiest times for animals on the road?
- Kangaroos live in mobs. What should a driver expect after one animal crosses?
- Which animals in the game are mostly active at night? How does that change how a driver should drive?
- What should you do if you see injured wildlife on a real road?
The wildlife guide has the facts students need for each animal.
Activity ideas
- Rescue Book hunt: each student finds one animal fact and shares it with the class.
- Map the Big Lap: trace Highway 1 on a map of Australia and mark the 15 legs, from Sydney to Tasmania.
- Kilometre maths: compare the length of road trips in the game. The Great Ocean Road is 275 km, the Snowy Mountains drive is 210 km, Cairns to Daintree is 140 km and the Kimberley leg is 1,555 km. How many Great Ocean Roads fit into the Kimberley?
- Design a sign: students design a wildlife warning sign for a road near their school.
Good to know
The world ranking shows the driver name a player types in, so ask students to use a nickname instead of their real name. The game is a fun way to start the conversation, not driving instruction: its road safety tips are general information.
